As the stress of everyday life increases, many people are drifting away from the city and attempting to spend more and more time in the country. There is certainly good reason to do so. Country living offers a safe, simple and traditional way of living that is difficult to attain in larger, more suburban areas. Country homes, with their large porches, tinkling wind chimes and expansive backyards are certainly enticing to individuals looking to get away from the stress of the daily grind and escape to a way of living that is more soothing.

Using the Island
A simple island can provide valuable extra working space, or you can opt for something more elaborate fitted with a sink or a cooktop. The top of the island can be made from laminate, solid granite, artificial stone, solid wood, or tiles. If you plan to use the surface for food preparation, choose real or artificial stone with a solid wood butcher block inset. It’s easy to damage a laminate top by forgetting to use a chopping board and although tiles are attractive they can be impractical as a work surface. Using real or artificial stone is sensible if you want to include a cooktop. Where electricity is being run to an island, it’s a good idea to make the most of it by installing a couple of outlets, either mounted in the top or on the side, so that you can use small appliances. Top-mounted sockets must be protected from spills and liquid by a flap cover.

Fireplaces somehow became my specialty. I started out with framing homes, building decks and designing additions. But, I did start coming up with some pretty interesting fireplace designs after I discovered the Ventless Gel Fireplace firebox and insert. You can literally do anything when you have those two things.
One evening, I received a call from a friend of mine in West Virginia. He had an idea for a fireplace and he knew exactly where he wanted to put it. He loved my idea of Ventless Gel Fireplaces, but this one was going to have to be a Do It Yourself job. I made plans and took the trip down to see what he was talking about.
