Are you tired of the celebrity driven circus revolving around Paris Hilton? Does the hotel heiress deserve to be behind bars for her flagrant disregard for the law? As a popular media figure, should she be responsible to set an example for the impressionable teenagers who emulate her?
The Baby Boomers or so called ‘Me Generation,’ on some level, weren’t all that different. They were often seen as egocentric and self absorbed, as having a sense of entitlement. But, along the way, they developed the capacity for self reflection. Current trends indicate baby boomers are going to be living longer than our ancestors. And, with living longer, the baby boomers road to health becomes an important issue.
We all want all want to maintain the benefits a healthy life has to offer. Baby boomers are no different. However, as we age our immune system becomes more and more depleted of it’s ability to protect ourselves against viruses and bacteria. Preventative measures may very well be our wake-up call to maintain overall health.

Have you noticed that, in our culture, slurs about gender, class, race and sex have become fairly commonplace and are often even seen as humorous by some? Howard Stern, Ann Coulter, Jesse Jackson and Bill O’Reilly, to name a few well known pundits, have been busy playing the ‘can you top this’ game. And pop culture icon Sasha Baron Cohen, thanks to his edgy jokes in the movie Borat, won Hollywood’s coveted Golden Globe award. Nevertheless, shock jock Don Imus crossed the line when he called the women of the Rutgers basketball team “nappy headed hos.” His remark stirred up all sorts of feelings – of outrage, vulnerability, anger – not easily put to rest.

If you recently received or will receive an invitation to join AARP (or maybe not so recently), then you can consider yourself a baby boomer. The accepted definition for a baby boomer in the U.S. is anyone born between 1946 and 1964. Most marketing experts consider this generation to be the most influential and powerful generation to ever come along. We have been changing things every decade as we enter new arenas - be they political, social or financial. Now our generation is starting to approach retirement, and as usual we are redefining everything again. We expect our retirement to be much more active then that of our parents and grandparents. One of the challenges we face is making sure that we stay healthy enough to do all the active things we want to accomplish. A chief concern for our continued or renewed health is proper weight control.

With such a gloomy outlook on their retirement years, Baby Boomers and other retirees are wisely taking a serious look at starting their own small businesses as a supplement or replacement (if need be) to social security funds.

Many of us “Baby Boomers” are each beginning to feel our age, and we’re starting to live it too. Every morning, clock radios everywhere announce the start of another day. As a typical boomer rolls out of bed, an old ache, pain, and/or little worry makes its presence known, just like the day before. The same beverage — coffee, tea, or maybe even caffeinated soda — is ingested in an attempt to energize the same tired face reflected in the morning mirror.

I am a Baby Boomer. I was a working caregiver. I am a business owner providing elder care education through workshops at the work place. I recently attended an Annual Governor’s Conference on Aging. During those three days, attendees had the opportunity to listen to our state leaders, department heads and other professionals talk about, lecture, and impart information on aging. So what did I learn? I learned that if we’re not nervous, we should be. If we truly believe our government backed support system, i.e., Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, are prepared to handle the 76 million Baby Boomers approaching retirement age, think again.
