In our modern society, it is common for women to take alcohol socially on a regular basis. What happens when the woman becomes pregnant? What are the official recommendations regarding alcohol intake and pregnancy?
The medical community has been alarmed for a long time now on the effects of alcohol during pregnancy, the worst outcome being fetal alcohol syndrome.
Since there is no way to determine how much alcohol is safe to take during pregnancy, a zero consumption recommendation has been the official position of the medical community. After all, the level of alcohol passing through the placenta varies on too many variables to be determined exactly. Such variables can be the weight of the mother, the stage of the pregnancy, the weight of the baby, the type of alcohol taken, etc

Within a few days of birth your baby’s digestive tract will be colonised by bacteria. How your baby was born - vaginal or by caesarean section - will influence the type of bacteria that your baby will carry.
It has been shown that the beneficial/friendly bacteria bifidobacteria infantis were found in about 60% of 4 - 6 day old full term infants who were born vaginally. Only 9% of babies born by caesarean section had B. infantis. It is uncertain how, but babies pick up the friendly bacteria from their mothers during the passage through a clean, healthy birth canal. It has also been demonstrated that bacterial or yeast infections in the vaginal tract can have serious effects on an unborn child including triggering premature birth and low birth weight infants.

Firstly we need to establish what the term ‘colic’ means. Colic is the term given to the build up of gases in babies causing pain and discomfort. It is not an illness or a serious medical condition; it is however, very draining for both mother and baby.
The main symptom of colic is usually constant crying for no apparent reason. For example your baby won’t be hungry, need their nappy changed or have a temperature, they will not want to be laid down, sat up, played with or left alone. Nothing you do will ease their crying. Most babies have a colicky time of day, which is usually in the afternoon or early evening. The good news is that colic normally passes by the age of 3-4 months.

The touch paper was lit after Ford complained to the NSPCC that Verity’s hardline approach to childcare as demonstrated in her Channel 4 series Bringing Up Baby is tantamount to abuse. Verity’s response? To challenge her opponent to a public competition to gauge whose method is the most effective.
Both women recommend the use of routines in childrearing but Verity’s approach is strictly old-school, insisting that her babies are left to ‘air’ in the garden for several hours and not cuddled for more than ten minutes per day. So controversial is her advice that she’s been asked to stay away from The Baby Show in Earl’s Court yet this is the woman who earns fees of up to £1,000 per day for her services.
